George Gray Medal to Professor Roy Sambles

Professor Frank Leslie presented the G. W. Gray Medal to Professor Roy Sambles of Exeter University, UK at the annual British Liquid Crystal Society Conference which took place in Leeds in April 1998. The George Gray Medal is awarded from time to time to eminent scientists in the field of liquid crystals by the British Liquid Crystal Society, and previous recipients include Professor John Goodby and Professor Frank Leslie.

BLCS 98 13th British Liquid Crystal Society Annual Meeting Bodington Hall, Leeds, UK, 6–8 April, 1998

The 13th Annual British Liquid Crystal Society meeting was hosted by Professor Neville Boden at Leeds University. The conference was held at Bodington Hall, a single site conference venue three miles to the north of the University and city centre. BLCS 98 was attended by 123 delegates from academe and industry, and was kindly sponsored by Linkam Scientific, Taylor & Francis and Novocontrol International.

This paper was presented by Professor Durand as the Sturgeon Lecturer at the 1998 Annual Conference of the British Liquid Crystal Society held at the University of Leeds (6–8 April 1998).

Thls year it was the turn of Southampton to host the 12th annual meeting, and Is the first time that the society has met in Southampton slnce Its Inaugural meeting, so long ago that this wrlter cannot even remember when. The meetlng came only two months after the openlng of the Southampton Liquid Crystal lnstltute and Director Professor Harry Coles did not miss the opportunity for some free publicity.

Report on the 11th Annual British Liquid Crystal Society Meeting, 1–3 April 1996

FLC 1995

Abstract The Fifth Biannual International Conference on Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals was hosted by Professor William A. Crossland at Cambridge University. Consisting of plenary and invited lectures, oral and poster presentations, demonstrations and a final panel discussion, the conference was attended by about 300 delegates from 26 countries around the world. The event was kindly supported by the International Liquid Crystal Society, British Liquid Crystal Society, SID, IEE, GEC Marconi, Sharp Laboratories Europe and Thorn EM1 CRL. The proceedings for FLC 95 will appear in a feature issue of the journal Ferroelectn'cs published by Gordon and Breach.

Polymer Liquid Crystals

Abstract The field of polymer liquid crystals is encompassing an increasingly wide range of research areas and applications, as was demonstrated at a recent one day meeting devoted to the subject. The meeting was held in London at the Scientific Societies Lecture Theatre, and was organized by the Institute of Physics Polymer Physics Group and co-sponsored by the British Liquid Crystal Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry.
